Families for Children is an Outstanding independent fostering agency supporting children and foster carers in the Southern counties and South London.

We have specialised in fostering for over 20 years looking after children placed by Brighton and Hove, West Sussex and East Sussex County Councils. We also work closely with Surrey, Hampshire, Southampton, and a range of London Boroughs. Our carers are supported by centres situated in Fareham, Chichester, Findon nr Worthing, Pyecombe nr Brighton, Laughton nr Lewes, Orpington and Surrey. We have an experienced team of qualified social workers and staff who ensure that carers and children are well supported when placed carefully together. We recruit, train, match and place with carers where we feel they will be able to meet a child’s needs effectively with a caring and nurturing attitude.

We strive to offer children and young people the best possible opportunities in life and go the extra mile to achieve this. Young people moving into independence are also supported in families known as supported lodgings placements. This gives them space to become independent and not necessarily take part in family life but live alongside a family who can guide and advise when necessary. Some of the children we care for have disabilities which may be wide ranging and affect access to community resources or activities. By working with the child’s parents and health professionals, we can ensure that such children are given equal chances to meet some of their ambitions by giving one to one support for dedicated periods of time, often referred to as Short Break care. Some carers enjoy using different skills and foster parents and their children or babies. Often this may be a mother and her new born child, but there is no strict criteria and some foster carers have supported mum, dad and two babies in placement! This is often a rewarding experience for both carers and parents who engage in the process and learn new parenting skills. Many of our children are placed with carers permanently which gives a real sense of security and belonging, others may stay for a short while before they are reunited home. A few of our young people have come from other countries to seek asylum from their war torn regions and integrated well into the community.

Other areas of our work includes a newly opened residential children’s home supporting up to six young people in a rural setting in Ditchling, nr Hassocks. The home has been fully renovated and decorated to the highest standard situated in its own grounds. Our DfE registered school is located in Findon nr Worthing; the team of teaching staff educate up to five children ages 6 - 11 yrs and provide the national curriculum adapted for children with special educational or behavioural needs. It was recently declared to be an Outstanding provision by Ofsted in September 2011. We manage a contact service in our Battle centre, nr Hastings which provides parents and their children a safe and comfortable place to meet regularly.
